In the folk handicraft of China, tin-Carving technology originates from Laiwu, Shandong. "Laiwu tin-Carving" sculptures technics is different from the Southern China′s tin cast molding because it uses manual techniques and hand tools to create its hollow structures. The creation process includes ten steps: Designing shape, creating model, choosing materials, cutting, molding, welding, shaping, polishing, carving and re-polishing. Using the carving techniques of wood and stone for reference, utilizing the meltability and solderability of metal, Laiwu tin-Carving created a "pull welding" technique that can efficiently shape the deep or low relief, which make the works much natural and dynamic.
The raw materials of tin comes from Ge Jiu, in Yun Nan province in China, which is famous as "The City of Tin". The purity of tin used for carving is 99.9 percent, which is named as "Green metal".
